North Slope Sustainable Wood

North Slope Sustainable Wood started several years ago when outdoor and adventure writer Peter Stark hired Matt Arno, a professional restoration forester, to thin Larch and fir trees on overcrowded forest land he owns on the edge of Missoula, Montana. After Matt’s crews thinned the stunted stands, leaving a beautiful forest of big healthy trees, Peter had the small-diameter Larch (or tamarack) logs sawn into flooring for a dance studio he was building with his wife, a modern dancer. The completed work was more than a dance floor – it was a showcase of the possibilities of this small-diameter Larch – and it attracted the interest of architects, builders, forest ecologists, the media and many others. With so much interest in the beautiful Larch floor and with their shared passion for restored forests, Peter and Matt joined forces to found North Slope Sustainable Wood and defined their mission: “Beautiful Larch Floors From Restored Forests.”
