Recycling is not just for bottles

It's amazing to me that we in today's society discard as much useful product as we do. I read an article yesterday that indicated that 20% of produce gets thrown out primarily due to spoilage. Who can afford that? Then it has to be transported for disposal... Well in my business of developing and selling home decor, I've seen "waste" material acumulate into heaps that were normally carted off and burned. We've made effort to incorparate that material into our designs. Wood scraps are used in our cabinets and wood dividers. On a larger scale, we use wood that was cleared from construction areas and recycle it. It's used to make tables, coffee tables, consoles and other decor.

I've read another article of a woman who is using discarded automobile parts such as mufflers, brake drums, etc. to make planters. She's now turned it into a business. Now that's something most of us can relate to. Perhaps we should keep an open mind as to what can be reused, and perhaps we should try to not buy as much of what hasn't been recycled or can't be in the future. Then, maybe we can have a bit of impact on what we leave behind.
