I am Dreaming of a Green Christmas

Well, it's September and I'm thinking and writing about Christmas. The average citizen doesn't realize that cities, businesses, and other organizations which put on large Christmas and holiday displays are already planning and preparing their holiday decorations. In the past few years there has been increased awareness about the increased consumption of electricity during the holiday seasons. In an effort to curtail this energy consumption many municipalities and businesses have made the switch to LED Christmas lights Depending on whether compared to a C9 incandescent light or a standard incandescent mini-light, LED holiday lights are 80-99% more efficient than incandescent string lights.

LED string lights also will last for more than 50,000 hours compared to about 2000 hours for standard incandescent lights. For most organizations this will mean a very quick return on their investment in LED holiday lights.

The big displays may consumer more energy, but it is the millions of households who have regular-sized displays that really use the most power. A recent study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency concluded if only 20% of U.S. consumers replaced their old incandescent holiday lights with the new highly-efficient LED string lights, holiday season energy consumption would be reduced by 400 GWh. (In 2003, the EPA estimated that 2220 GWh of energy was consumed in the U.S. by holiday lighting.)

So this year when you are thinking about Christmas and the holidays, make it a bit Greener with LED holiday lights.
